Blackberry or Motorola Q?

I need to purchase a new cell phone and I’m dying to get my Verizon Wireless service back.  Even though it sucks to pay for a cell again it’s just not reasonable to rely on my employer for that.  So, I’ve narrowed my search down to the Blackberry 7130e and the Motorola Q.  The Blackberry is definitely larger and not as easy to drop in the pocket and run around.  However, the huge benefit is native Google Talk and Maps support.  I can actually walk around the country and be fully connected to Google Talk.  Awesome plus in my book.  The Q is so slim it’s crazy and it runs Windows Mobile 5 so there is opportunity for development.  I’ve found software that will sync my calendar, contacts, and such from my Mac for both devices.  What sucks is email support.  I use Gmail and I guess I could setup POP support in whatever client each device supports.  It would be so awesome if there was a native application on the Blackberry for Gmail.  I’d be sold yesterday!

Now, the real kicker in this whole debate is the rumor of the Apple iPhone.  The day that product drops, if ever, I’m all over it.  Consider a device that’s an iPod, digital camera, and has perfect Mac OS X integration with iTunes, iPhoto, Mail, iCal, etc, etc.  Sweet Jesus, I’d be in heaven.  So regardless of which device I purchase, it’s temporary until Steve Jobs makes my decade and reveals the Apple iPhone. :D
So, given all of this, what would you choose?  I guess it’s pretty obvious I’m leaning towards the Blackberry.

I personally would wait for the Apple phone…being an Apple nut, the mere thought of me buying a phone/Blackberry and then having Apple release a sweet cell phone makes me feel sick…so I am going to hold out…if it is not out by Feb, then I am going to buy a different one.

Is your purchase required immediately or can you wait?

Yeah I pretty much agree there. My issue is that I kind of need to buy right now. I’ll be starting a new job in a few weeks and I’ll be losing my company cell phone, that doubles as my only phone… :-/

I would be willing to bet that when the iPhone does drop, its sure as hell NOT going to be available on Verizon. It would prob. be a GSM phone, so it would have more worldwide uses.

As far as the Q or the blackberry, I would pick the Q. Often, you have to purchase a blackberry plan with the blackberry. With the Q from verizon, you do have to buy a Data plan (but the phone is like $200 now). Also, the Q IS THE ONLY PHONE from Verizon right now with Bluetooth data transfer…so iSync will actually somewhat work with it out of the box, at least letting you send files and photos, etc. I carried a blackberry for a while, and never really used it. I have been looking at the Q or even the ‘Chocolate’ currently. Debs is about to buy the RAZR next week too.

You can get the data/voice service for a BB directly from Verizon, so that’s nice.

I’ve played with the Q some and it’s nice and slim, but the keyboard feels so fake and weak. I didn’t really like that. Tiny buttons to make it all fit on the form factor.

Both devices are $200 from Verizon and I also found that the BB model I’m looking at has Bluetooth support. That PocketMac software worked out of the box and even through Bluetooth I believe.

Almost all phones have bluetooth….BUT not the data transfer, only for like a bluetooth headset. This is according to the rep though.

Ive used pocketmac numerous times, but with USB. Also…the only downer, that there is/was a problem with PocketMac BB on the intel macs right now…ive seen the problem too :(

Damn, I’ll check it out tonight. I’m going to head over to Circuit City here shortly and get a better feel for how I can use it. If worse comes to worse, I just won’t worry about syncing it for now. I mean the sync for me would be about the contacts and calendar viewer (from GCal, through iCal). And I highly doubt I’ll be going through and building a contact in AddressBook for everyone on my phone. :) If only I could sync my contacts from GMail….

I’m in the same situation, my contract is up for renewal next month and I’m not sure which one I want. I have a friend that just got the 7130 and likes it, but I played around with it some today and I didn’t really like typing on it. I played around with the Q yesterday and thought it was OK, but the phone is kinda wide, because I like to carry mine in my pocket this might be a problem. Part of me is just saying screw the whole smart phone thing and just the LG Chocolate, from what I have heard it is pretty good phone but I have not had that chance to play with one myself.

I finally got to play with the Chocolate, and despite all the media hype about it (i like the marketing around it right now), the phone is odd. The touch pad is nice, but the sensitivty is weird, very weird. That, and the buttons really dont make sense on the main pad.

Interesting. Katie’s roommate just got the Chocolate. I’ll have to ask her what she thinks so far.

I’ve heard the same thing about the sensitivity of the touch pad, but from some posts I saw on a forum, the sensitivity can be adjusted.

Interesting, I did not know that. I just remember playing with it on Saturday, and the keys were just odd. But man, its a cool looking phone!

7130e should be here tomorrow. :)

I have it from a credible source that Apple purchased a GSM protocol stack a while back. This does not mean that this is what will come with the iPhone but it does tell us that that was the way they were leaning at the time.
